The Whole Grains Story

The Whole Grains Story
Whole grains have set the diet world abuzz the last few years. Why? Because whole grains offer more hard-to-get nutrients such as vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, and fiber when compared to refined grains. Whole grains also contain phytochemicals and antioxidants, and when eaten as part of an overall healthful, low-fat diet, whole-grain foods have been associated with improving your overall health.

Getting Grainular

Whole-grain foods are made with the entire grain seed, which is made up of three parts: the bran, germ, and endosperm. Once the grain is broken or split through the milling or refining process, the bran and germ are often removed. The health benefits associated with the nutrient-charged bran and germ are lost.

Bran--The bran is the coarse outer layer of the grain. It's the most fibrous part of the grain and contains phytonutrients, magnesium, and B vitamins. Germ--The germ is the heart of the grain and contains B vitamins and minerals. Endosperm--The largest part of the grain, the endosperm contains the most carbohydrates and protein.

Go with the Grains

Don't be fooled by labels such as "100% wheat," "multigrain," or "cracked wheat"—these might sound good, but they rarely contain the entire grain as an ingredient. Searching out the phrase "whole grain" somewhere on the package or finding "whole" in the product's ingredients list will ensure that you are getting the entire grain seed and its benefits. For example, whole wheat, whole rye, whole barley, or whole oats listed in the ingredients ensures that the product contains whole grain.
Nutritionists recommend eating at least 48 grams of whole grains daily. MyPyramid translates that amount into servings of food. For example, MyPyramid recommends three 1-ounce servings of whole grains a day for people on a 2,000-calorie diet.

There are a wide variety of whole grains available in the United States.

Healthy Choice and Whole Grains

When you're looking to work whole grains into your diet, try Healthy Choice. Healthy Choice uses Ultragrain, a 100% whole-wheat flour, and Sustagrain, a 100% whole-grain barley flour. Ultragrain is a white wheat flour that has been milled to ultrafine particle size using a patented milling process to create a flavor, color, and texture similar to refined flour. Sustagrain is a high-fiber barley that has more protein than regular barley and three times more soluble fiber than oats.
Ultragrain and Sustagrain help pack the goodness of whole grain into many Healthy Choice meals. In fact, our Healthy Choice Honey Ginger Chicken Select Entrée has a whopping 31 grams of grainy goodness!
